What to pack in your personal item

The idea of a personal item is to give you easy and practical access to important items that you might need during the flight. This means your larger carry-on bag can be safely stowed in the overhead compartment and you can avoid the hassle of pulling it down during the flight.

Items to prioritise include:

  • Wallet and foreign currency if applicable
  • Phone, tablet and chargers
  • Medication, especially prescription ones
  • Book or magazine that you might want to read on the flight
  • Passport holder and any essential travel documents

What is the difference between a personal item and a carry-on?

A personal item has to be small and compact and is usually brought into the cabin alongside a larger carry-on bag.

A carry-on is stored in the overhead compartments. Your carry-on bag could be a cabin suitcase, rucksack, duffel bag or handbag that will typically be larger than your personal item and smaller than checked luggage. Airlines also have size restrictions for carry-ons, so be sure to check these before flying as well.
